Breaking Barriers: Duncan and Andile’s Journey from Learners to Skilled Technicians
For Duncan Msimango and Andile Sigasa, their journey began at Saint Vincent’s School for the Deaf, a place where education planted the seeds of possibility. Both students learned of an exciting new opportunity—a training facility tailored for the Deaf community to acquire sewing skills.
“I didn’t know how to sew when I started the learnership,” Duncan shared. “But now, I have a skill that I am proud of.”
Andile echoed this sentiment: “When I joined the learnership, the classroom was full of fun and excitement. But as we moved to the production floor, the work became constant and demanding. It taught us discipline and perseverance.”
Beyond sewing, both Duncan and Andile found themselves drawn to another passion—machine repair. “When I started working at the factory, I developed a love for fixing machines,” Duncan explained. “It’s been so much fun learning this new skill.”
Andile agreed, adding: “I’ve learned so many things since starting here. First, sewing skills, and second, the ability to fix machines. It’s been an incredible journey of growth.”
Their story is a powerful testament to breaking barriers and creating opportunities for the Deaf community. With newfound skills and confidence, Duncan and Andile continue to inspire others, proving that determination and passion can unlock a world of possibilities.
