A Remarkable Journey: Leo Pickering’s Path to Success

At Thandeka Vocational Education Trust, we are privileged to witness the transformative journeys of our students, and Leo Pickering’s story is a shining example of resilience, determination, and growth.

Leo’s journey began in 2009 when he left high school and started working as a grocery store packer for Pick n Pay. For nine years, he balanced the challenges of being a single parent with the necessity of making a living. Despite his limited educational background, Leo’s drive to create a better future never wavered. In 2017, Leo seized an opportunity to pursue a certificate in Garment Construction through TVET SA. Leaving behind the financial security of his job, he embraced the challenge of learning a new trade. With no prior experience in industrial work, he demonstrated extraordinary dedication and a willingness to grow.

Leo’s efforts paid off. Equipped with the skills and training he received at TVET SA, he began practical training at Keedo International, a kids wear manufacturer. Within two years, he advanced from machinist to mechanic, a testament to his hard work and adaptability.

In 2019, Leo expanded his expertise by completing a Basic Mechanic course and earning a trade certificate. Alongside mastering machinery repair and maintenance, he developed a passion for workplace safety. His commitment to ensuring a safe environment for his colleagues led to his promotion as Health and Safety Chairman at Green Thread Manufacturers (Pty) Ltd.

Today, Leo oversees health and safety protocols, conducts risk assessments, and leads safety training sessions, all while handling procurement and building maintenance. His ability to lead, innovate, and resolve challenges reflects the values we aim to instil in all our students.

When asked to advise current learners, Leo emphasizes the importance of passion and purpose:

“A purpose is nothing without passion – Without passion, a purpose lacks the energy and enthusiasm needed to truly make a difference”

“Be responsible. Don’t do things that only benefits the now, think how actions affect you in the long term.”

“Don’t give up (just yet) Obstacles and setbacks are common in the pursuit of our goals. Look at them as opportunities for growth. This can help you maintain focus to your goals.”

Leo Pickering’s journey is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved through dedication and continuous learning. His success inspires us all and reinforces the life-changing impact of
education.
